A Confused and Unconvincing Plot
Sonu (Vishwak Sen) owns a beauty parlor and decides to dress up as a woman named Laila (Sunita Goswami). The idea of dressing up as a different gender has been done in better movies, but “Laila” doesn’t give any reason or depth to its idea. Sonu becomes Laila without any explanation and the plot degenerates into absurdity and cheap jokes. The film fails to deliver any sort of message or smart humor. Instead it relies on outdated jokes and choppy narrative. The movie leaves you confused, not amused.
Vishwak Sen’s Effort Wasted on a Poor Script
Vishwak Sen is one of the most versatile actors working in Indian cinema today and it’s a testament to his acting prowess that he agrees to do such an awful film like ‘Laila’. His performance as a demented and disturbed man is proof that he is willing to take risks and explore new avenues, but even a decent performance can’t save this film.
The script lets him down as there is no depth or nuance in his character. Sen gives it his all and it’s evident that he is committed to the role, but bad dialogues and terrible jokes take away from his performance. It’s a shame to see such a talented actor in such a poorly written movie that doesn’t give him the platform to showcase his talent.
Weak Supporting Cast and Lackluster Direction
The supporting cast doesn’t do much to elevate “Laila” and their acting would be more suited for a low-budget YouTube skit than a movie. Characters aren’t developed and actors aren’t given direction, so their performances are uninspired and forgettable. Ram Narayan’s vision or lack thereof is also a big reason “Laila” fails. Direction is incoherent and attempts at humor are forced and offensive. The film’s gender portrayal is tone-deaf, so comedy is offensive instead of funny.
Technical Flaws and Audience Rejection
Technical aspects of the movie don’t improve much. The cinematography is lackluster and the production values are extremely low for a theatrical release. The music could have been the savior, but the songs are forgettable and the background score sounds out of place. The audience reaction to the movie has been terrible. There are reports of people walking out of screenings. By the time the movie reached 70% of its runtime, most theaters were nearly empty. Audiences were frustrated and disappointed by the movie.
Laila Movie Review: Rating
Laila is a total disaster, with a story that has been so poorly developed that it’s laughable. A complete waste of time and money, Vishwak Sen’s cinematic debut is a laughless comedy that fails to entertain or even keep you interested.
Rating: 1/5 – A film so bad, it might only be remembered for how forgettable it is.
